Presidential was incorporated in 1971 by H. Joseph Levine, who left his job as Assistant Professor of Business Law at the American University in Washington, D.C. to make his hobby his new career. For 34 years, we operated a retail store in Alexandria, Va. which we closed in April of 2005. However, we continue doing business via the mail, internet and auction. Our address is Post Office Box 277, Clifton, VA 20124.
ABOUT US
After 37 years in business, Presidential has established a national reputation in two interrelated fields; Political Americana and exonumia (tokens and medals.)
Presidential maintains a large inventory of earlier official inaugural medals. Please e-mail us with your want list and we will be happy to quote you on items in stock. Also, listed below are modern (from Dwight D. Eisenhower to George W. Bush) official inaugural medals we stock. We are also constantly in need of various kinds of inaugural material other
than medals. We are currently looking for all inaugural police badges and pre-1953 inaugural invitations and programs.
POLITICAL AMERICANA
Mr. Levine is the author of the Collectors Guide to Presidential Inaugural Medals and Memorabilia (1980), a standard reference on this subject. He has been a member of the Official Presidential Inaugural Medals Committee for 1981, 1985, 1989, 1993,1997, 2001 & 2005. He was also selected to write the historical pamphlet which accompanies both the 2001 and 2005 Official Medal. Presidential has had a major hand in building virtually every major inaugural medal collection that has been assembled in the past thirty years. Either through private treaty sale or its auctions, Presidential has handled every bronze official inaugural medal; most of the silver presentation medals and many of the gold presentation medals. Presidential has also been a leading purveyor of 19th century political tokens. After many years of selling both the common and the rare, Presidential was chosen to auction the fabled collection of 19th century political tokens assembled by long-time dealer, Charles McSorley. This collection was sold in three parts. The catalog for the first part earned the Numismatic Literary Guild Award for the Best Exonumia Catalog of 1997.
EXONUMIA
Mr. Levine is a Past President of the Token and Medal Society and is a former Vice President & Legal Counsel to the Civil War Token Society. He is a member of many specialized clubs in the broad field of exonumia. He is the author of numerous articles on the subject of tokens and medals published in The Numismatist, The Journal of the American Numismatic Association. In addition he has served as a consultant on various subjects to The National Portrait Gallery; The American Numismatic Association; The American Numismatic Society and The Smithsonian Institution - National Numismatic Collection. Most recently, he was awarded the Carl W.A. Carlson Award for Outstanding Research and Writing in the Medal Field by the Medal Collectors of America.
